As a first step, it is necessary to identify possible sources of stress.
One important source of tension can be the school life of adolescents. School demands that put pressure on adolescents, as well as the disappointment from low grades and unfinished homework – all these can consume a large part of the teenage energy. The school is a major source of stress. It is established that children in the school are in a state of chronic emotional, informational, sensorimotor, near vegetative and psychogenic tension, exhausting the sympathetic-adrenal system. This is especially true for right-brain children with poor academic performance. The training focused on left hemisphere thinking, competition, fear and negative emotions inevitably leads to stress, which is the psychophysiological reaction of the organism to the effect of the environment, which goes beyond the limits of the adaptive norm.
The constant threat of punishment for erroneous responses and actions contributes to tension. The situation with children in elementary school can be described as follows. Many children, especially in the first weeks and months of training, have such changes in the body that allow talking about “school shock.” This is due to order, and perfection demanded from pupils. During stress, there is a violation of interhemispheric interaction, which is the main reason for “forgetting” information on examinations. This is especially true in the lessons of teachers of an authoritarian-suppressive type.
Numerous studies have shown the following picture. The chronic impact of tension dramatically inhibits the development of the child’s brain. During stress, development and myelination of the nerve pathways occur only in the survival centers, while the development of the nerve structures in the limbic system and the neocortex is limited. The constant impact of tension leads to the follows. Nervous activity is concentrated mainly in the right hemisphere and brainstem, in the sympathetic nervous system. The remaining areas of the brain, especially the frontal lobe of the left hemisphere, can be partially blocked. During stress, special chemicals elements are released. Being necessary to reduce pain, they destroy brain cells, especially the hippocampus of the limbic system, directly involved in learning and memorizing. They may be too liberal with students or too strict, constantly caring or busily detached, meticulous in detail or democratic. Teachers define a lot in real life of children. The reason for ridicule can be any little thing: glasses, “not that” hair color, high or low height, too tight complexion or a quiet voice. The psychology of the adolescent is specific. Any moral trauma takes on a universal scale. From the age of 12 in the body of a teenager, there are stormy changes against the background of physical ailments and moral suffering. At this time children need psychological help from adults. They should teach how to cope with irritation, emotions, and ailment. The proper tactful help of adults will help the child to form as a person, not to close oneself, not to get stuck and not to think up various phobias. Girls may plague themselves with diets. Boys suffer from high or small growth or awkwardness, although in fact, natural processes occur in their organisms. Increased suspiciousness makes the child take on his account any troubles in school and at home. These can be overloads, stresses, conflicts with classmates, misunderstanding of parents and teachers. All this adds stress to the lives of children.
For a gentle teen mentality, it is dangerous to be in stress for too long. Scientists have proved that the constant stresses of adolescents lead to a weakening of immunity, frequent illnesses in adulthood, and deterioration of mental health. The sooner parents recognize the stress of a teenager, the less likely that it will grow into depression.
